Cabernet Sauvignon

Santa Rita
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 . . . .
. 8.99
89/100 - Our score.
This has to be the sub-$10 Cabernet buy of the year.
Not only do you get rich and ripe fruit flavors of blackcurrant
and black cherry, there are the added complexities of oak, herbs and
earth all perfectly interwoven with none of these flavors overpowering
the others. After these fantastic flavors entertain your palate,
the wine finishes with velvet-like tannins. You will think that you are
drinking a $30 wine. (Chile)
Bonterra
Mendocino County
Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 . . . .
. 11.99
88/100 - Wine Spectator. “Supple, elegant and polished, delivering
ripe, fleshy plum, black cherry, mineral, spice and light cedary oak
flavors that are well-proportioned, gaining length. Drink now through
2011. (California)

Santa Rita
“Medalla Real”
Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 . . . .
. 15.99
91/100 - Our score.
Is there a better Cabernet value than the
Reserve Cabernet from Santa Rita? The answer
is yes. Their Medalla Real Cabernet is made
from hand-picked grapes from a single estate. It is
aged for just over a year in French oak. This wine
can compete with third or fourth growth Bordeaux at
a fraction of the price. The 2004 and 2005 vintages
both scored 91 in the Wine Spectator and we feel that
the 2006 is of equal or better quality. More structure,
more grip and more complexity than the Reserve.
Blackcurrant, damp earth, cedar, and vanilla flavors.
Super concentration, with sweet tannins in the finish. Drink it
now or lay it away for ten years. (Chile) |

Milat
St. Helena Napa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 . . . .
. 18.99
91+/100 - Our score.
This small-production, family owned and
operated winery delivers a tremendous
amount of value. The quality rivals that of many other
Napa Cabs that fetch three to four times the price.
Sumptuous aromas of ripe blackberry, black-cherry
and plum are layered with notes of cedar, spice, and
mocha. The silky rich fruit coats the palate with a
harmonious balance of oak, caressing tannin and
fresh, invigorating acidity. The luscious fruit continues
to linger with subtle oak spice on the long, smooth
finish. Delicious to drink now, this wine can only get
better as it softens with more time in the cellar.

Col Solare
Columbia Valley Proprietary Red 2005 . . . .
. 39.99
Winery price: $75. Median online price: $64.99.
We’ve got the lowest price in the country!
93/100 - Wine Spectator.
94/100 - Wine Advocate. “Col Solare is a partnership between
Tuscany’s Marchesi Piero Antinori and Chateau Ste-Michelle which
started in 1995. Curiously, the one wine produced uses only traditional
Bordeaux grapes. The 2005 Red Table Wine is composed of
71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc.
It also spent 27 months in new French and American oak. The
2005 vintage contains more Red Mountain fruit which may be why
it is more structured and powerful; it’s also the case that 2005 is
a superior vintage. The wine is purple-colored with notes of wood
smoke, mineral, spice box, black currant and blackberry. On the
palate, it is full-bodied and layered with the tannins well concealed.
Reminiscent of a top level Pauillac, it will evolve for 5-7 years and
provide pleasure through 2030.” (Washington)
