More Great Reds

Paul Achs
Burgenland Zweigelt 2005 . . . . . 7.99
This bottling should sell for over $20 per bottle. At $7.99 this is a huge deal!
88+/100 - Our score.
From one of the great producers of Austrian red wine comes this tasty and juicy, slightly mature Zweigelt. Zweigelt is a cross of Blaufrankish and St. Laurent, two noble Austrian red grapes. This bottling is drinking beautifully now and is rather similar to an Oregon Pinot Noir, showing red fruits of cherry and strawberry, a touch of mushroom and forest floor, and a lively, tangy finish. Try it slightly chilled this summer with anything from the grill. (Austria)

Maquis
"Calcu" Colchagua Valley 2007 . . . . . 9.99
Also available in 3-liter bottles for $39.99!
88/100 - Our score.
89/100 - International Wine Cellar. "($13; 50% cabernet sauvignon, 30% carmenere, 15% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot) Bright ruby. Intensely perfumed scents of cherry-cola, raspberry and violet. Sappy red and dark berry flavors are nicely concentrated and penetrating, with piquant minerals providing lift. At once creamy and vibrant, with tangy mineral thrust on the back." (Chile)

Flor de Crasto
Douro 2008 . . . . . 10.99
88-89/100 - Our score.
This contains the usual suspects from Duoro: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. Elegant aromas of both red and black berries along with a hint of black pepper. Smooth as silk on the palate with mostly red fruit flavors and that loamy earth of Portugal. (Portugal)

Hogue
"Genesis" Columbia Valley Syrah 2007 . . . . . 11.99
89/100 - Our score.
90/100 - Wine Spectator. "Smooth and velvety, delivering a warm, inviting mouthful of blueberry, plum, coffee and spice flavors that linger against refined tannins. Drink now through 2015." (Washington)

Masi-Tupungato
"Passo Doble" 2009 . . . . . 12.99
89-90/100 - Our score.
A fun wine here. Masi brings its specialty of double fermentation to Argentina. Passo Doble is a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% semi-dried Corvina (the primary grape variety that creates Valpoicella and Bardolino). First the Malbec is fermented normally and then the semi-dried Corvina (known as appassimento) is pressed and fermented. The wine is then aged for 9 months in French barriques. The end result is this beautiful wine that combines bright flavors of blueberry and black berry along with very soft tannin and sound acidity. (Argentina)

Bodega Norton
Reserva Malbec 2007 . . . . . 12.99
88/100 - Our score.
90/100 - Wine Spectator. "Very ripe and very primal still, delivering a large core of velvety-textured raspberry, fig and boysenberry fruit that is liberally laced with dark toast, pastis and roasted vanilla. Should settle in nicely with modest cellaring, as the structure is dense, but polished and integrated. Drink now through 2011." (Argentina)

Kaesler
"Stonehorse"
Barossa Valley Shiraz/Grenache/Mourvedre 2007
. . . . . 13.99
The IWC lists this for $23. Our price is 44% less!
90/100 - Wine Advocate.
91/100 - International Wine Cellar. "($23; 54% shiraz, 24% grenache and 22% mourvedre) Bright ruby. Alluring aromas of black raspberry, Asian spices, minerals and tobacco, complicated by hints of smoke and game. Sweet, lush, broad and complex; spreads out to coat the palate with fresh red and dark berry flavors. With its lovely mineral precision and lift, the finish displays a distinctly juicy quality." (Australia)
